Why and When to Use a Message Queue
Why and When to Use a Message Queue
MediumBackend0% accepted
Sending a welcome email inline makes signup slow and fails if the email provider is down. Explain how a message queue (e.g., SQS/Kafka/RabbitMQ) fixes this and what it costs. Cover: async decoupling, smoothing traffic spikes (back-pressure), retries + dead-letter queues, at-least-once delivery and the need for idempotent consumers.
Approach
Push slow/unreliable work onto a queue; a worker processes it async. Queues absorb spikes, retry failures (DLQ for poison messages), and decouple producers from consumers — but add at-least-once semantics, so consumers must be idempotent.
